David Aikman

David Aikman

David is the Director at NIESR and joined in July 2025.  He was previously Professor (in Practice) of Finance at King’s Business School and the inaugural Director of the Qatar Centre for Global Banking and Finance.  He co-founded the Bank of England Watchers’ conference (together with Richard Barwell) and launched the Macroprudential Matters blog.  David is a member of the Bank of England’s Macroprudential Roundtable and, until July 2025, served on the Prudential Regulation Authority’s Cost Benefit Analysis Panel.  He has recently advised the Central Bank of Ireland, the Bank of Canada, and the Central Bank of the UAE. In 2023 he was a Visiting Professor at Keio University, Tokyo.

Earlier in his career, David worked at the Bank of England, culminating as Technical Head of Division in Financial Stability.  From 2013 to 2015, he was seconded to the Federal Reserve Board as an advisor in the Division of Financial Stability.  He represented the Bank in international fora including the FSB, Basel Committee and ESRB. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Warwick.

David’s research interests are focused on macroeconomics and finance: specifically, monetary policy, financial stability, and macro-financial risks.
