While hopes of an end in sight have been raised by news of a vaccine, the pandemic continues to pose what Bank of England chief economist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=ce691ed74a&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andy Haldane<\/a>\u00a0calls a double jeopardy \u2013 \u2018a risk to both life and to livelihood, a risk to both health and wealth\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the Economics Observatory released a short film \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=e2726dcfb5&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Economics Meets Epidemiology<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 exploring the collaboration between economists and public health experts designing policy responses that can improve both health and economic outcomes. This week, we focused on two key elements of those interactions in the face of the second wave of the virus and renewed lockdown: what\u2019s happening to people\u2019s jobs and pay; and what\u2019s happening to their mental health.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Work and wellbeing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since we launched in June, a number of Observatory articles have focused on the effects of coronavirus on the world of work, including a comparison of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=9089a068d0&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">US and UK labour markets<\/a>; examinations of the experience of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=5a3c34d961&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">self-employed<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=4d61a164ec&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">apprentices<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=dbcde69be1&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">young people starting their careers<\/a>; and a series of pieces on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=21da5afb33&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">job furlough schemes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some of our most recent posts look at monthly UK labour market data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which were released on Tuesday with the latest information on employment, earnings, redundancies, benefit claims and vacancies.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=97e420df41&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rory MacQueen<\/a>\u00a0at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=20e30c3d29&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NIESR<\/a>) focuses on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=a440599507&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wage growth<\/a>, showing the recovery in average weekly earnings over the summer, but the continued wide variation in earnings across the economy \u2013 in part due to differences in sectors\u2019 shares of furloughed workers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"align-center\" src=\"http:\/\/www.economicsobservatory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CJRS-Wage-Growth-2.jpg\" alt=\"Figure showing degree of furloughing & wage growth\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"28d22ce5-63db-40b2-8716-ba3fba25d9d5\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In one of our new \u2018dataviz\u2019 pieces,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=92452dca8e&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Wadsworth<\/a>\u00a0at the Centre for Economic Performance (<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=f26d900196&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CEP<\/a>) comments on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=9c1b1bbb67&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">redundancies<\/a>, which have been widely touted as being at \u2018record highs\u2019. But as Jonathan explains, that doesn\u2019t account for the fact that the workforce is much bigger than it was 25 or even ten years ago \u2013 now at 33 million workers, four million more than at the start of the 2008 recession. Put in that context, we are still some way off the dark days of 2008 and not remotely close to the experiences of the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>In another data article,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=d04709cc82&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steven Proud<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=e01e4ed54d&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bristol<\/a>\u00a0shows how the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=d6976a4aea&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">18-24 age group is bearing the brunt of job losses<\/a>. This resonates with my last newsletter \u2013 on \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=df7e528ef6&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Generation Covid<\/a>\u2019 \u2013 which highlighted how the pandemic is causing particularly severe damage to the lives of school children, university and college students, and young people starting out in the labour market.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"align-center\" src=\"http:\/\/www.economicsobservatory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Employment-age-group.jpg\" alt=\"Figure showing employment by age group\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"4677368e-15e5-436f-9b83-a4d1485e6c0c\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The labour market\u2019s link to mental health comes in a fascinating article by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=5b2b6d41eb&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fabien Postel-Vinay<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=605881f8b0&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University College London<\/a>\u00a0and the Institute for Fiscal Studies (<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=18f78c5fc6&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IFS<\/a>), who has written for us before on the challenge of getting good matches between employees\u2019 skills and employers\u2019 needs \u2013 and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=02e63ce979&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how labour market policy can help get people back into the \u2018right\u2019 jobs<\/a>\u00a0as the economy recovers from the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>His new piece explores the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=7849d41e1d&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">adverse effects on mental health<\/a>\u00a0of job and income loss, of being in a low-paid job and of changes in working conditions. In particular, he looks at the exposure to stress in different occupations, which understandably affects future mental health. There is clear evidence that the crisis is not only increasing the stress levels associated with certain occupations \u2013 the NHS, social care and other key workers \u2013 but that people are also moving from their old jobs into new ones that are potentially more stressful.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"align-center\" src=\"http:\/\/www.economicsobservatory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Exposure-to-stress-2019-20.jpg\" alt=\"Figure showing exposure to stress, vacancies\" data-entity-type=\"file\" noreferrer\">Celebrating Impact<\/a>\u2019 awards, which includes important work on adolescent mental health by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=a5e843a613&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emla Fitzsimons and Praveetha Patalay<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirusandtheeconomy.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cf582c108c506269a8235882&id=b1c3afe990&e=bd429df7ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institute of Education<\/a>\u00a0at UCL; and a lifetime achievement award to\u00a0<a
