Many students have had online classes exclusively, while others have had \u2018blended\u2019 teaching where some small classes still occur in person, but none will have sat in a lecture theatre packed with hundreds of their peers.<\/p>\n<p>They are also studying economics as the Covid-19 crisis develops in real time. In this respect, they are not dissimilar to the young people who came to the subject during the 2008\/09 global financial crisis \u2013 an event that led to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-35462879\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increase in applications<\/a> for places. Yet, many were left disillusioned by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-35462879\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">content of their degree<\/a>, which they felt offered little explanation or even mention of the dramatic economic events that featured daily on the news.<\/p>\n<p>The emergence of a student movement for change led to a great deal of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economicsnetwork.ac.uk\/news\/curriculum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soul searching<\/a> in the discipline of economics and, consequently, to the creation of a new, freely available first-year undergraduate course \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.core-econ.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CORE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Wendy Carlin (University College London) and Sam Bowles (Santa Fe Institute), CORE, which celebrated its seventh anniversary last\u00a0week, pushes critical issues such as climate change, injustice, innovation and the future of work to the foreground, and teaches economic tools as a way to address these challenges.<\/p>\n<p>To \u2018check the pulse\u2019 of the issues that matter most to economics undergraduates, since 2016 the CORE team has asked first-year university economics students across the globe to answer (in a single word or short phrase) the following question: \u2018What is the most pressing problem economists today should be addressing?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The word cloud below summarises this year\u2019s responses, collected from approximately 3,500 students in 17 universities across eight countries.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"align-center\" src=\"http:\/\/www.economicsobservatory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Global-2020-cloud-1-1.png\" alt=\"Word cloud from 2020 undergraduates\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"ad86645e-501b-4260-a170-8f468405a255\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, the term Covid-19 features prominently this year. The word cloud captures all mentions, including those accompanied by terms such as \u2018implications\u2019, \u2018recession\u2019 and \u2018recovery\u2019. Indeed, the pandemic has not only interrupted this cohort\u2019s education but also increased uncertainty about their future employment prospects.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related article: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coronavirusandtheeconomy.com\/question\/data-young-people-bear-brunt-covid-19-job-losses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data: Young people bear the brunt of Covid-19 job losses<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As in previous years, inequality remains a particularly pressing issue that economics students believe should be urgently addressed and one that the current pandemic is likely to exacerbate. We have already seen that the most vulnerable in society have disproportionately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2020\/oct\/15\/inequality-rising-covid-equal-society\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suffered<\/a> since the first lockdown in March.<\/p>\n<p>As the word clouds from 2017 and 2019 below indicate, concerns around climate change and environmental sustainability are growing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"align-center\" src=\"http:\/\/www.economicsobservatory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CORE-Word-Cloud-2017-2019.jpg\" alt=\"Word cloud, 2017 and 2019\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"f73fd983-e879-4c40-97a8-e0c7c9e9d086\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Where environmental concerns were secondary to inequality and unemployment just a few years ago, they are now prominent in the minds of economics undergraduates. For the generation who joined the \u2018strike for climate\u2019, global warming and environmental degradation pose existential threats that they argue should be addressed without delay.<\/p>\n<p>These views were echoed by school students at the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ideasfestival.co.uk\/events\/discover-econ2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Generation Covid<\/a>\u2019 session at this week\u2019s Festival of Economics, organised by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discovereconomics.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Discover Economics<\/a> (a campaign to increase diversity in the discipline).<\/p>\n<p>As this pandemic has shown, issues such as inequality, climate change and the Covid-19 crisis are deeply intertwined and will need to be addressed through cohesive, joined-up policy.
